Awesome. In modern usage we use awesome as meaning amazing but when it was first coined in the 1600's it meant awe as in terrorAwful. At the same time as awesome was moving from terrifying to amazing awful was moving in the opposite direction. Originally, in the 1300s, it meant something awe-inspiring, worthy of respect and admiration. It was only in the 1800s that it came to mean something specifically bad.
