I suspect that when Bill last addressed the club that members were deeply concerned about his rapidly fading health.

Nevertheless the announcement of his death on the 22nd of January came as a shock.

Past and current club members joined Bills family, other friends and Rotarians from far and wide at a celebration of his life at St Columbia Presbyterian Church on Thursday January. I am sure everyone there and those joining by Zoom can not have helped but be impressed by the quality of the tributes, the music [chosen by Bill] and the wonderful attention too detail in the organisation

Over the next months much will be written about Bill, his life and the contribution he made, in publications with considerably greater circulation than our bulletin. I know that our members and bulletin subscribers need little reminder of what a wonderful husband, family man, club member and contributor to Rotary on the world stage that Bill was.  The thoughts of all members are with Lorna and family.

In the Bulletin that follows is a  tribute from Bill Duncan and some photos of the day.

Bill Boyd

It is with deep sadness that we marked the passing of our esteemed and much loved member and past Rotary International president 2006-7.
Bill had been a member of the Rotary Club of Pakuranga since 1985.

However, his Rotary career spanned over 50 years beginning as a member of the Rotary Cub of Wellington North in 1971 from whence he became District Governor in D-994 in 1983. His transfer to Auckland came about through his extensive career with Gordon and Gotch.

Bill and his wife Lorna were known and loved throughout the Rotary world. Among his many international positions held were, NZ Polio Committee member, International PolioPlus Task Force and Committee member, Chair of the Rotary Foundation and Rotary International Treasurer.

Among his many accolades received throughout his career were the awarding of The Queens Service Order in 2007 and the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2013.

Apart from the many and rich personal memories Rotarians and friends will have of Bill, is the legacy left by the Bill and Lorna Boyd Charitable Trust, which has so far purchased and had distributed through Rotary Clubs over 220,000 illustrated dictionaries to children in decile 1, year 4 schools throughout the country. The remaining trustees are committed to the objects of the Trust which is also a perpetual memory to one of Rotary’s finest servants.

Throughout his careers, Bill was ably supported by his wife Lorna, who in her own right gained a reputation for her international skills and support of Rotary ideals. Bill and Lorna recently moved to Napier to be close to Lorna’s family.

Scribe
Rotary Report 20 January

Events of the last few weeks have quite correctly taken centre stage but on a much lighter note is a "report" from the scribe or in this case more correctly the bard.  Thanks to Ian for his, as usual, impeccable organisation and the ladies of inner wheel.

Oh, we do like to meet beside the seaside -we do like to chat and have our tea
We do like to catch up on the Christmas sagas-Who did what?  and then we swig our lagers.
Ro-ta-ry is underway - thirty enjoyed the company
The food was a delight and there’s zilch for me to write
What could be better?   Beside the sea.
