When President Duncan said he wanted to do things differently during his year, we certainly have had some change. To be honest, not all changes have been accepted by some members but unless we try new things, we won’t know what is successful and what is not. Most things in Rotary now are dynamic and with some possible modifications, we hope to achieve a fulsome future for Pakuranga Rotary.

One of these changes was our Christmas celebration this year on Sunday 16th December. Over 50 participants enjoyed the convivial atmosphere and excellent fellowship for lunch at the Edmund Hillary Retirement Village. We welcomed two new Paul Harris Fellows, Ken Worsley and Nick Loseby who thoroughly deserved the recognition for their Service above Self and their full involvement in Pakuranga Rotary activities. It caught both by complete surprise and it was great to enjoy their reaction to the award bestowed on them.

Lunch was followed by spirit hijinks on the pétanque court and the bowling green until a heavy shower curtailed the competitive banter and sterling efforts. Others took the opportunity to have a guided tour around the complex maybe to plan their future retirement one day? The afternoon concluded with the Salvation Army Band who gave an excellent rendition of many old Christmas favourites and some new versions of carols and hymns. A sergeant’s collection from the lunch was presented to the Band as a small token of appreciation for all that the Salvation Army do in the community.

Finally, a special thanks to President Duncan for his willingness to try something different, plus Bob Richie for organising and hosting the event and to the willing staff at the Village for their food and service. For those who couldn’t make it, unfortunately you missed an excellent function.
