This contest was initiated by PDG Noel Holyoake in 1983 and has been contested over the years by the three secondary schools in our catchment area namely, Pakuranga College, Edgewater College and St. Kentigern College.

The teams this year were from:

  • Pakuranga College – Nathan Merton, Te Haua Taua and Juliane Dinglase
  • St Kentigern College - Josh Looker, Jorden Rogers-Jenkins and Tate McGregor

The moot set by the debate chairman Peter Woodcock. The moot was: That the Battle against Global Warming has already been lost. The topic was in keeping with Rotary’s emphasis on the environment and provided a level platform for the debate.

The judges were Jeanette and Geof Roberts and we were pleased to welcome them back for the occasion. The affirmative team was Pakuranga College and negative St Kentigern College. The Speakers maintained high standards and both sides highlighted very pertinent arguments which clearly highlighted that both teams almost had equal advantages as the debate progressed. The judges had a difficult decision to make but St Kentigern College were ahead by a small margin and retained the Holyoake Cup.
