Along with many clubs in our district, maintaining membership is a challenge. However last Monday evening current members and partners were joined by large numbers of past members, friends of Rotary, District Governor  and Community Board members demonstrating that the spirit of Rotary remains alive and well.

The fellowship and fun that was evident as the evening progressed along with the chance to catch up with people from the past showed just how important these gatherings are. Research shows that loneliness is as harmful to health as smoking 20 cigarettes a day and as part of an active Rotary family we have a valuable role to play in providing opportunities for fellowship.

A huge thanks to Ian who  does so much to ensure that these celebrations continue to be available to members and friends of the club.

55th Birthday Celebration
55 Years!
Close to a hundred present and past Rotarians, partners, family and friends celebrated our birthday in style this week at the Bucklands Beach Yacht club. The conversational buzz outside of eating and being entertained was evidence of great fellowship and the opportunity for a catch-up with old acquaintances. As suggested by the principal organiser Ian Handisides, Paul Harris Fellowship medals adorned many a chest to add an extra touch to already impressive attire among the men and the women as usual matched or surpassed this degree of elegance.

A few formalities briefly interrupted the chat as foundation member Bob Ritchie and current President gave reminders of our main achievements over the years and then cut into a beautiful birthday cake.

Entertainment was provided with an hour’s trip down memory lane via the talents of Debbie Dorday and her talented side-kick Jim Jolls. Familiar standards sung by the likes of Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Nancy Sinatra, and many others were interspersed with (sometimes slightly non-pc)  jokes and semi-bawdy Music Hall type offerings which drew appreciative reaction from the audience. Dramatic costume, wig and character changes added to the glitz and variety of a most enjoyable interlude.  Dessert was then served.
A sincere vote of thanks goes to Ian and his team for making this celebration possible – here’s to the 60th!

Guest Speaker
The issue of electricity generation in New Zealand and the wider issue of climate change were the themes of Brian Leyland's address to the club.
It was a detailed and wide ranging address covering NZ energy production, the costs and difficulties associated with getting to net zero, the issues and limitations of renewable energy production and storage and questions about the impact of our efforts on global climate.

On the issue of global warning and climate Brian questioned the scientific communities conclusions about man-made global warming arguing that there was no real world evidence supporting it.

A selection of images from Brians presentation are attached below. For readers who would like access to the full presentation I have that as a Powerpoint and can make it available via email on request.

A number of Brians key points and assertions are at odds with those of the majority of the wider scientific community and there will be readers of the Bulletin who will disagree strongly with at least some of the points made.  The questions that followed the presentation indicated that members are certainly keenly interested in the ideas and material that Brian presented.

A night at the theatre
Members will remember a fun night at the theatre recently. Joan Swift has negotiated another great deal with the Howick Little Theatre,
The play is Vanya and Sonia and Marsha and Spike.
Vanya and Sonia have led quiet and uneventful lives while taking care of
their ageing parents in their family home. However, their peaceful existence is upended when their glamorous movie-star sister Masha unexpectedly arrives with her much-younger boyfriend in tow and a plan to sell the house. Insecurities and old resentments boil over in a weekend of wild costume parties, hilarious misunderstandings and unexpected romance.

Please note that the correct price is $35/ ticket not the $24 that was advertised in the last Bulletin.

When: Thursday 17th July
