President Govind welcomed guests and members including:

The Honourable Michael Woods, Former Labour Party Minister of Transport and Deputy Leader of the House
District Governor-Vidja Chand
Exec.District Secretary - Nitika Chand
Past District Governor - Gary Langford and wife Jan,
Past District Governor - Willard Martin and wife Gabrielle
Rotary Community Leader - Evelyn York
Past President of Highbrook Rotary -  Leslie McLagan
Adele Siljeur - Pakuranga College
President of Inner Wheel - Sue Miller

During the year the club focus has been on fellowship and President Govind thanked Malcolm McLagan, Graham Kearns,   Dennis Kavanagh and Ian Handisides for their assistance.
The accompanying Power Point presentation highlighted the club’s main activities undertaken during the year. Whilst we are only a small group of members the number of projects  and range of projects is impressive and our  new sculpture located on the rotary footpath is drawing favourable comment from the local community and visitors to the area.
The River Carnival, Golf Day and the Diwali Celebrations were very successful.

Govind presented a Paul Harris Fellowship to Lesley McLagan, for her tireless work for Rotary including the planning and management of the River Festival .

In presenting Adele Siljur with a Paul Harris Fellowship, Peter Woodcock outlined the very valuable work that Adele had done for many years with an active and involved Pakuranga College Interact Club.

Govind then presented the annual Rotarian Cup to Graham Kearnes.

Our guest speaker Michael Woods has enjoyed a long association with the Pakuranga area reminiscing about the times when what is now heavily built up residential and commercial was once open farmland. Memories includes attending Pakuranga College where he was a member of the school debating team which participated in the Holyoake debate and defeated Saint Kentigern College.

In his youth he worked parttime at Hugh Wrights and commented on the associated benefits of interacting with customers, something that and brought back memories for many members who had also worked in the retail area in their youth.

He provided an interesting insight into New Zealand today and the problems we all face, the pressures facing many in the workplace and not surprisingly the pressures of a career in politics.

A New Rotary Year
Once upon a time [as most fairy tales begin] each Rotary year was introduced with a new theme. Clubs often followed that notion and a new President would arrive with a new club focus.
As we head into our new club year with a repeat president the focus for the coming year is much more about maintenance and evolution than any major revolution. The intention is that we continue to do all the community work we are able while also actively building the fellowship that is an integral part of Rotary.
As the club "matures" and evolves it is important that while working to meet the needs of our community we also meet the changing needs of our members.

At the local level it is also important that we look to how we can best support and work with other local clubs - "stronger together" .

On the issue of change

Our guest speaker at our most recent meeting was Mike Bongiovanni from The Pakuranga United Rugby Club. While already a successful club with large numbers of playing members Mike as C.E of the club also acknowledged that the club needs to adapt to continue to be successful.

That adaptation involves a very major facility development and they are currently completing phase 2 (detailed design) of making the Howick Pakuranga Community Sports Centre a reality.

This has involved validating the local need for such a facility and Mike explained how the demand for flexible use court space for such activities as badminton, table tennis, basketball, pickleball and more, in our community far outstrips the availability of such space.  The plan is for nearly 6,000 sq. meters of indoor flexible use space

Stage 3 is the construction stage but in-between the dream and the reality comes a significant fundraising stage. The PURC team has an application lodged with Auckland Council via the Sports & Recreation Facilities Investment Fund for the seed funding for this project. As part of the process, they are sharing the vision with influential local groups to build awareness and momentum for the project.

Scribes Report
President Govind, in his last regular meeting before changeover, presided over a full program which featured the presentation of a Paul Harris fellowship, a farewell summary of her year by Helene, recognitions of the sponsors of our golf tournament, two community awards and detail of the planned Howick Pakuranga Community Sports Centre at Lloyd Elsmore Park.

A Paul Harris Fellow Award was conferred on Past President Mike Collins, recognising not only his long service to Rotary since 1989 in various clubs but his outstanding community service in organisations such as Life Education. And those who have attended the Xmas party over the years knows the magic he brings to being a wonderful Santa Claus! In accepting the accolade, Mike noted that Rotary had been kind to his family over the years and we can look forward to his continued involvement going forward.

It was also an evening where the club was able to make two Club Community Awards

Johnny Chetty teaches children with special needs, is involved with various charitable trusts and works with students at Mt Richmond Specialist School. From South Africa, he is guided by the belief there is one universal language-the language of the heart, and that responsibility is an honour, not a burden.

The second recipient was  Julia Castles, formerly of Howick Inner Wheel and currently President of Pigeon Mountain Garden Club. Julia manages a staff or 25 delivering English language skills to 800 migrants. She is also involved in training 80 volunteers to work with refugees and migrants in their homes.

Two very worthy recipients who join the extensive list of awardees honoured by the Club over many years.

Our exchange student Helene is returning to Germany shortly and entertained members with a kaleidoscope of images, colours, friends, experiences and memories from her time in New Zealand. From the South Island trip and the Tongariro Crossing to her grateful thanks to her Host Families, Helene spoke of her life changing experience and thanked the Club for such an enriching time.

The Club presented a replica cheque (remember cheques?) for $20,000 to St John Ambulance representing the second donation of such an amount in the last two years resulting from the Golf Tournament.

Representatives from our major sponsors were also in attendance to be acknowledged for their generosity and ongoing support. Ray White Eastern Group again played a significant support role and others including Pakuranga Park VillageCoombes Johnston BMW Hamilton, Bruce McLaren Village, Pak & Save Botany and United Industries all contributed to another successful event.

By 16 June, Club Member Gerald Patterson had covered more than 4200km of his 5150km bike ride from San Francisco to New York. The Club has donated an extra $1000 to Gerald’s nominated charity Motor Neurone Disease NZ. Snow on Day 13 in the Rockies caused havoc with the planned schedule. With the end in sight, Gerald and the team are now having to cope with a heat wave in the Eastern U.S.
