Presidents thoughts.

We have kicked off another Rotary year and a special thanks for all that have braved the winter to come out to our meetings we need your support at our meetings so that we can reconnect with each other after a turbulent two years. Fellowship is such an important part of Rotary without fellowship we will find it challenging to engage with our community on projects that can provide support .

As has our world has changed so to must Rotary , this will be a major focus going forward collaboration with other Rotary clubs and groups to get things done will be more important to how we carry out our projects . Our community will be looking towards Rotarians to lead the way in providing the opportunity for like minded people to get involved in supporting what we do . Now is the time to talk with your friends your neighbours your adult family about how they can become involved in Rotary they may well have ideas that spark an interest in supporting our projects .

I believe now is the time that community and fellowship is more important to our daily living needs after coming through the last two years of isolation from each other. I urge you to reach out to those you know and welcome them into our Rotary club.

Cheers Pres Mike

Scribes Report.
Dr Bryan Thompson.

Monday the 8th saw members treated to a presentation on a very topical issue – Public Health: Protection, Prevention and Promotion.
The battle against Covid will go on for some time as the virus mutates but the expectation is that each new wave will see less hospitalizations and deaths.
However, at the same time we battle with successive variants of Covid some old foes have returned.
Measles, chicken pox and polio have all made unwelcome returns often in communities where that would not be expected.

Why is this occurring?  Largely because of lower vaccination rates, covid lockdowns, populations who have not built up any natural immunity and the growth of widespread conspiracy theories about vaccinations. These factors can combine to make some populations especially vulnerable as the wide variation in vaccination rates across New Zealand shows.

If you are worried about any of the above, then Bryan’s warning about the impact of global warming on possible disease spread will not have helped. Diseases that have been restricted to one area of the world due to climatic barriers are now spreading to new areas as the climate changes.

Bryan then moved on to the secret sauce. Why do some populations seem to live longer and well? There were some basic rules. Downshift to less stress. Be part of the right tribe and feel that you belong. Focus on loved ones first – the power of the family. Eat good food but not too much [stop before you are full.] Move naturally over the course of the day. Have a purpose in life.
He finished with a challenge. What am I going to do this week?

Dictionaries in Schools.
About 40 young pupils at Anchorage Park Primary School in Pakuranga were delighted to receive their colorful Rotary-sponsored dictionaries at a special assembly this Monday ( 8 August).
Representing Pakuranga Rotary Club Peter Woodcock and Bill Duncan presented the dictionaries to two year levels as Covid prevented any distribution in 2021.

Peter told the pupils about Rotary as a global club and the special focus given to literacy by Bill Boyd in his year as World President in 2007/8.

He encouraged them to make good use of the gift to build up their knowledge of words which are the source of power in so many ways.

The enthusiastic opening and examination of the dictionaries once received created a real buzz among the happy pupils who on leaving the hall were effusive with their thanks.

For the Rotarians, as always it was a heart-warming experience.
